The creation of the US Army Special Forces in the early 1950s, was built on the "shoulders" of the men who just fought in WW2, the most devastating war the world had seen. Men like Major Gen Robert McClure, Colonel Aaron Banks, LT Gen William Yarbourgh, Colonel Jack Shannon, and Colonel Wendell Fertig, just to name a few. From their experiences, they recognized a need for a Special Forces type organization in the US Army. Through their vision, perseverance, and drive, the US Army Special Forces was created at Fort Bragg, NC on 10 June 1952.   

 

Colonel William McAthur, Colonel Ray G Glaze, Colonel Joesph McCrane, LT Colonel Angelo Galante, Sergeant Major William "Rebel" Haynes and Maj Gen Raymond Hufft, these farmers, lawyers, police officers, truck drivers and businessmen volunteered to strap on a parachute for the first time or again, nearly 15 years after WW2 ended. As with their Active-Duty colleagues, these men recognized the need to include Special Forces in the US Army reserve component and helped to usher Special Forces into the USAR and ARNG.  

    

On the "Shoulders" of these "Giants" and many more after them, the US Army Special Forces Regiment continues to be the Tip of the Spear, for Unconventional Warfare in the US Army.
