15 April 1960, the entire SF establishment was formally brought under the Army’s new Combat Arms Regimental System (CARS). This paper scheme initially provided for a maximum of 24 SF Groups, initially all in the Active Component (AC).
The 3rd SFG(A) was activated on 3 Dec 1963.
The 3rd SFG(A) was organized under TO&E 33-105D, dated 21 Mar 60. This new TO&E brought the Special Forces units in line with the US Army unit organizations and terminology.
3rd SFG(A) designated Area of Responsibility (AOR) was Africa
The first commander for 3rd SFG(A) was Colonel James B. Bartholomees
3rd SFG(A) Notable Personel
COL Jesse Uglade
During WWII LT Uglade fought with the 3rd ID in Africa, Sicily and Italy. 1943, while fighting in Sicily, LT Ugalde was personally given an on-the-spot promotion to Captain from General Patton. Later he served in the Korean conflict. CPT Uglade was assigned to 77th SFG(A) and served as an Adviser to ARVN Army. COL Uglade was 3rd SFG Commander in 1967.
