Company D (Augmented), 1st SFG(A) was activated by USCONARC General Order #34 on April 15, 1966. The unit was formed from 7th SFG(A) at Ft Bragg, NC. The classified mission for D co, 1st SFG(A), was to establish Foward Operating Bases (FOB) on the eastern border of Thailand and conduct combat operations into Laos.

COL Robert BarteltÂ
LT Bartelt served with the 65 ID in Europe from 1944-1945. CPT Barlelt joined Special Forces in 1955, serving with 77th SFG(A) and served with 1st SFG(A) from 1958-1962.
LTC Bartelt commanded D co 1st SFG(A) and then continued as the the Commander of 46th SFC(A).
Company D (Augmented), 1st SFG(A) started a 10-week premission train up planned and coordinated under the lead of MAJ James Bell.

Training started with a 4-week course on the history of China and Southeast Asia in July. The teams received training on history, language, geography and customs of Thailand.
​
In August 1967, D Co 1st SFG(A) conducted a Command Post Exercise(CPX), for the staff, and the pre-deployment exercise RED RIVER at Camp MacKall for the entire unit.Â
​
On 10 Oct 1966, D Co 1st SFG(A) deployed to Thailand.  The mission changed last minute and instead of Laos, the Command and teams were to be deployed thoughout Thailand and conduct counterinsurgency training for the Royal Thai Army.Â

A couple days after arrival in Thailand, B-410 and their 4 ODA, drove 300 miles,for 2 days, up to their Area of Responsibility (AOR) near Nam Pung Dam. B-420 and ODAs drove to their AOR, 125 miles east from Lopburi to Pak Chang.Â

5 Nov 1966, B-430 and their 4 ODAs, conducted the largest Airborne operation in Thailand to date. The teams jumped from C-123s, flown by the 606th Air Commando Squadron, onto on old WW2 Japanese air field, into their AOR to establish a base of operations. The teams would continue to be resupplied by airdrops for months after.Â

Each B-Team and their A-teams (4) were assigned the mission of conducting a five-week , three-phase counterinsurgency course for units from the Royal Thai Army.

On 13 Mar 1967 the unit was tasked with training 3 Infantry battalions for the Royal Thai Army Volunteer Regiment (RTAVR) for their deployment to Vietnam.Â

COL Robert BarteltÂ

LTC Zoltan KollatÂ
From Youngstown Ohio, SGT Kollat served with the 504th PIR in the 82nd ABN amd the 517th in the 17th ABN in WW2. LT Kollat served with UNPIK in the Korean War.

LT Alexander served on Det A-424 with D co 1st SFG(A) in Thailand and as Commander of 4624 with 46th SF Co(A). In 1968 he served with detachment A-421 in Ba Xoai, Vietnam.
